November 13, 2013
Congratulations to the second class of Macy Undergraduate Leadership Fellows, which includes: Bianca Austin, Tara Cooke, Rachael Crum, Olivia Dalrymple, Caitlin Grady, Holly Hagy, Kathleen Keenan, Addison McInnes, Neha Patel, Jayna Patel, Sarena Patel, Bhakti Patel, Freddy Parez, Andrea Pouschine, Nydia Sanchez, Skylar Veunephachan, Lakira Williams, and Ari Man-Willrich. The fellows boast a diverse mix of CNHP majors such as Nursing, Health Sciences, and Health Services Administration.
The program was originally started in 2011 by Roberta Waite, EdD, who developed the concept following her receipt of a Macy Faculty Scholar Award from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.
The Macy Fellowship program consists of three, three-credit courses that run consecutively during the fall, winter, and spring quarters, which work to foster and grow leadership skills among selected students. Courses include Courageous Action: Leading Authentically; Group Dynamics and Leading Teams; and "Leadership in Action" and Community Health. The Program is a unique opportunity that promotes students to become the next generation of leaders in our changing healthcare system by improving health care quality. The program also focuses on issues of racial diversity among healthcare professionals to improve health outcomes for the public.
Andrea Pouschine, a recently selected member of the new Macy Fellowship class, commented on how the Macy Fellowship Program will help her meet her professional goals. “It is an amazing opportunity to receive one-on-one mentorship from a successful leader in my area of interest who is willing to invest time in helping me develop and achieve my own personal goals. It is also a privilege and a joy to receive insight shared by such a diverse group of undergraduate healthcare leaders”. Tara Cooke, another Macy Fellow, stated, “I was intrigued by the opportunity to start learning more about how to be a leader and the opportunity to learn with a group of my peers from various health science concentrations.”
The Macy Undergraduate Leadership Fellow Program is geared toward developing professional goals and leadership abilities through interaction with a diverse array of healthcare professionals and mentors.
