Drexel Nursing Faculty Present at Sigma Theta Tau International Biennial Convention in Indianapolis
December 19, 2013
Members of the Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions’ Nursing faculty attended the 42nd annual Nursing Honors Society Convention hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana from November 16-20. Faye Meloy, an associate clinical professor and the Associate Dean for Pre-licensure Nursing Programs, and Roberta Waite, an associate professor and the Assistant Dean of Academic Integration and Evaluation of Community Programs, represented the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the convention. Together, Meloy and Waite gave a presentation titled, Experiential Introspection: An Integrated Approach to Meaningful Leadership Development in Undergraduate Nursing Students.
The presentation addressed content on newly- insured individuals from diverse backgrounds and vulnerable communities who will soon seek additional access to healthcare resulting from the passage of the Affordable Care Act. It also highlighted that Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) working in federally-qualified community-based healthcare centers will need to respond to the higher demand for healthcare access. APNs will now be required to address principles that include social justice, cultural competence, quality assessments, and evaluative strategies to ensure effective delivery of healthcare.
