On Friday, November 30, another Mural Arts Program Porch Light Initiative open studio day was held at 11th Street Health Family Health Services. There, members of the 11th Street community continued work on an art project that they had previously started, which involved outlining different herbal plants with medicinal value and health benefits onto tracing paper.

The Drexel Graduate Student Association raised a total of $1,300 for The 11th Street Family Health Services Expansion Fund by hosting an Academic Casino night for Drexel’s graduate students.

Lori Tiberi, a 2002 alumnae of the College’s Master’s in Creative Arts Therapy Program, has long promoted patient recovery through drawing, painting, and other creative projects. Today, she works as a creative arts therapist at the Magee Rehabilitation Center in the Jefferson Health System

Recent graduate Amber Hazan, BSN, RN, who now works at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, collaborated with co-worker Mary Markov, MEd, RN, to write an article for the Technology section of The Journal of Pediatric Nursing.

In January 2013, Drexel will open a new office in Washington D.C. that will serve as an outreach and academic center for both the University’s campus programs and for Drexel Online.

Veronica Carey, an assistant clinical professor and the Associate Director of the Saturday Scholars Program for the Behavioral Health Counseling Department, attended the World Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation’s (WAPR) conference, “Change Thinking, Change Practice, Change Services,” in Milan, Italy. There, she gave a presentation on the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner, or CPRP, credential.

During the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania’s 60th Anniversary Convention and Alumni Reunion in mid November, Dr. Gloria Donnelly, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions, gave a keynote address titled, “The Many Facets of Nursing: Yesterday to Today.”

On the evening of December 6, alumni of the College of Nursing and Health Professions gathered in a cozy space above Tir na Nog Irish Bar and Grill in the Phoenix building for the College’s Alumni Holiday Party.

Nursing faculty from the College’s Center for Interdisciplinary Clinical Simulation and Practice (CICSP) spent the week of November 26, 2012 at The University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, which is the judicial capitol located in the heart of the country. Leland “Rocky” Rockstraw, PhD, Linda Wilson, PhD, Carol Okupniak, and John Cornele provided a simulation immersion certificate in healthcare simulation for a diverse group of midwives, nurses, clinical skills staff, managers, lecturers, simulation equipment suppliers, and technical staff who came from multiple South African universities as well as from the country of Botswana.

Sheri Silfies, PhD, who is an associate professor and the Research Lab Coordinator for the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences Department, presented her current research on trunk neuromuscular control in low back pain on December 17 as a part of the Brotz Lecture Series in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University

Patricia Shewokis, PhD, a professor in both the Nutrition Sciences and the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences Departments, will be featured on the Discovery Channel on January 17.

The Center for Integrated Nutrition and Performance, which is located in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, offers a weight management program for Drexel University faculty and staff that taps into the expertise of the University community to teach healthy lifestyle choices.

Stella Volpe, PhD, Chair of the Nutrition Sciences Department, was interviewed by Men’s Fitness Magazine for a Q&A article about stomach bloating that men may experience during and after a workout.

Stephanie Ross, an assistant clinical professor and the Director of the Complementary and Integrative Therapy Program, was invited to be a podium speaker at the Pennsylvania Hospital’s 9th Annual Nursing Conference on November 29.

Margaret (Maggie) O’Neil, PhD was appointed to a newly formed American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) task force dedicated to exploring the role of physical therapists in prevention, wellness, fitness, and disease management.

Ellen Giarelli, an associate professor in the Division of Graduate Nursing, gave a talk about genomics and autism at The Franklin Institute as a part of the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute’s Community Lectures and Events series: “Genomics and Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

Drexel opened its Expressive and Creative Interaction Technologies (ExCITe) Center, which provides both an open work area for inter-college collaboration and a place to showcase multi-disciplinary activities and projects. Located at the University City Science Center’s 3401 Market Street building, the ExCITe Center will demonstrate how the conversion of many technologies, such as humanoid robots, video games, and digital knitting machines, can encourage innovation across multiple fields.

David Ebaugh, an assistant professor in the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences Department, gave a presentation titled, “Scapular Muscle Function” and ran a shoulder and elbow cadaver anatomy workshop at the 2012 Shoulder and Elbow Update in Philadelphia during mid November.

Tara Cooke is a student in the on-campus Bachelor’s in Nursing Program at the College and her mother, Susan Cooke, 51, is currently enrolled in Drexel Online’s MSN in Nursing Leadership Program. The Cooke family exemplifies an interesting trend in higher education: multigenerational learning among family members.

Kymberlee Montgomery, DrNP, Assistant Clinical Professor and Nurse Practitioner MSN Department Chair, was invited to present at the United States-Russia Forum, “Bilateral Collaboration to Improve Women’s and Infants’ Health,” which took place in Moscow from May 21-23.
