Michael Dahnke has coauthored a book with Michael Dreher, associate professor of nursing in CNHP, the book Philosophy of Science for Nursing Practice presents an introduction to the basics of the philosophy of science that underlies both theoretical and practice inquiry for doctoral nursing students. The text includes the views of classic philosophers in the field such as A.J. Ayer, Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn and Bruno Latour. Basic issues and problems addressed include the problem of demarcation, the problem of induction, observation, theory, evidence and justification, feminism and science, and the special problems of the social sciences. The book will be published by Springer Publishing in October 2010.
Stephen F. Gambescia was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Delaware County Community College, one of the largest community colleges in the state of Pennsylvania. Gambescia will be able to share this experience with students in the nonprofits in health care and management and leadership courses. Gambescia and Ann Solan, assistant professor in the Goodwin College of Professional Studies at Drexel, published “Attributes Used to Promote Adult Continuing Education Degree Programs in a Metropolitan Newspaper” in the Journal of Continuing Higher Education.
David Flood helped plan a two-day program in May “Through the Lens of Time: Perspectives on Medicine and Health Care” for the Pennsylvania Medical Humanities Consortium. Flood has spent a year continuing studies in ethics demonstrating the commitment that the CNHP degree programs have in building ethically minded students and health care professionals.
Kristine Mulhorn and Michelle Sahl cooperating with Yvonne Michael from the School of Public Health will be presenting a poster at the November annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Denver, CO titled “Healthy Aging across Four Countries: Measuring Functioning and Aging in the Community."
Connie Perry served as a guest editor for the special issue on “Transnational Dialogues in Feminist Bioethics” in the International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics. Also in Portland Oregon this spring she presented on “Credentialing Ethics Consultants: Discussing a Model in Use for Nine Years,” at the combined meeting of the International Conference on Clinical Ethics Consultation/International Society for Clinical Bioethics Conference. Look for Perry’s chapter “Responsible Conduct of Research and Publication Ethics” in an upcoming book by Jagadeesh, G, Gupta, YK, Murthy, S, & Prakash, A. Biomedical Research: A Compendium from Concept to Publication.
Michelle Sahl completed her doctoral dissertation on "Urban Neighborhoods as Determinants of Health Status" and is working on its publication. Sahl gave a brief presentation to a health care class students at Community College of Philadelphia on "Hospital Closures - The Decision-Making Process." CCP is one of the top transfer colleges for HSAD students.
