MULFP is a voluntary for-credit leadership certificate program designed for undergraduate students who have majors in nursing, health professions, and public health. This program focuses on leadership development skills to enhance leadership capacity and efficacy. Inter-professional learning, development of cultural awareness and soft skills are supported. Students learn to address complex issues in a safe and inclusive environment.
The Macy Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program (MULFP) provides pertinent cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and experiential learning that positively shapes leadership development for students in the health professions. The basis for the MULFP:
- Focuses on giving students tools that are beneficial in all aspects of their development
- Fosters interdisciplinary learning
- Recognizes social justice as integral to leadership and promotes diversity and intercultural competence
- Suggests that leadership can be learned and is both positional and non positional
- Supports development of self knowledge attitudes, skills, & ethical values
What can MULFP do for me?

Leadership begins with self-knowledge. Self-knowledge includes understanding your abilities and qualities Leaders are shaped by critical life events, culture, and the social fabric of society. Your
leadership characteristics and traits can be developed given that they are an ongoing process of
development. You will:
Become more self-aware and be able to incorporate what you are learning in various aspects of your life
- Learn that it takes courage to examine your own values, purpose, and beliefs
- Realize that leadership is not just an outward process – we can and do lead ourselves.

Who can apply to this program?
Any undergraduate student who will be a sophomore, pre-junior, junior, or senior September 2017 within the College of Nursing and Health Professions or enrolled as an undergraduate major in Public Health can apply to the program. Students voluntarily apply to the program; the courses are part of Drexel University’s curriculum.
How long is the program and when are classes held?
The program is structured as a package which includes three 3-credit hour elective in-person courses taken over three consecutive quarters –fall, winter, and spring within one academic year. The classes are held each quarter Monday, 3:00-5:50 pm on the Center City Campus.
Is acceptance based on GPA?
A students’ GPA is only one criterion that is used to determine student’s admission into the program. We also consider other factors listed in the application, particularly the brief essay responses as well as the findings from student interviews with a Macy Faculty member. These interviews are scheduled after the student submits their completed application.
If I am not accepted into this program, can I just apply for the courses like any other course?
No, only applicants accepted into the program can register for these courses. Applications are due before April 15th, 2017.
Do I earn credit for these courses?
Yes, students earn three credits for each course that is successfully completed; these courses count as electives. Please be mindful not to overload yourself with credits. Talk to your academic adviser to make sure you do not go over your credit limit when adding these courses. Sometimes issues with financial aid arise when taking over 20 credits per quarter. Make sure this will not affect you when committing to the 3 courses over the fall, winter spring quarters.
Are the courses rigorous?
The three leadership courses offered in this program have the same level of rigor as other three credit courses in the University. However, the method of engaging students offers less lecture-based teaching and more interactive group efforts compared to many courses. It is writing-intensive, allows a student to enhance their public speaking skills, coupled with numerous reflective exercises.
Do I have to take all three?
Students accepted into the program are committed to completing all 3 courses consecutively. The courses are not delivered as ‘stand-alone’ modules, and are prepared as a full academic year of progressive leadership learning. Once all three courses are successfully completed students earn a letter indicating competencies achieved and a Macy Leadership Certificate.
What happens if I am on co-op?
Students who will not be in the Philadelphia area should not apply. Classes are in-person. MULFP has a collaborative relationship with Steinbright Career Development’s Co-Op office which works with local employers to support each student’s attendance of classes. The Co-Op office sends a letter to the student’s employer prior to each quarter. Students are also responsible for professional communication with employers to negotiate their schedule. To date, we have not had any problems with students attending class during co-op.
When are these courses offered?
These courses are offered on Monday, one day a week, in-person, 3:00pm-5:50pm on the Center City campus.
What happens if I have a conflict in time?
Since students will be informed of their acceptance into the program spring quarter prior to the start of the program in the fall; students have the ability to arrange their schedules accordingly for the next academic year. They must work with their academic advisers to plan their schedule. Classes for some courses that conflict with a Macy course are offered on-line to facilitate flexibility. If by chance an extreme situation occurs where Macy courses cannot be taken consecutively and the student is truly committed to completing all three courses within the next year, special consideration may be offered. This situation will be examined on a case-by-case basis.
What if I am already serving in leadership roles. Do I really need this course?
This course helps students authentically learn about themselves which is requisite to effectively collaborate and lead others. This course also emphasizes (1) interdisciplinary learning which is a necessity in today’s healthcare climate and (2) critically integrates social justice principles with leadership learning.
- MULFP classes are unique, use minimal lecture style format, and are student centered. Class format varies, featuring seminars, group activities, guest speakers, workshops, round table debates, and panel discussions. Students will be active participants in their own self development.
- Three consecutive courses are completed in fall, winter, and spring; classes may have students from any of the undergraduate majors within CNHP
- Fall N310: Courageous Action: Leading Authentically
- Winter N311: Group Dynamics and Leading Teams
- Spring N312: Leadership in Action and Community Health
- Consideration will first be given to students committed to taking all 3 courses consecutively (3 credits each; total of 9 credits).
- Students may use these courses as electives.
- Updated Resume
- Two Essay Responses – 250 words maximum for EACH essay
- Two letters of recommendation forwarded with application. One from a professor in your program and another from an advisor, employer, or professional staff
- There will be an in-person interview required with Macy faculty
