Major: BS Data Science

Year: Senior

Hometown: Khartoum, Sudan

I chose this major because...  data science is driven by the sheer power and potential it holds in extracting insights from vast amounts of data. It offers a unique blend of analytical challenges and opportunities to decode patterns that can have profound impacts on industries and individuals alike. I also picked up a Software Engineering minor following my first COOP. While Data Science allows me to analyze and understand the data, Software Engineering equips me with the tools to build scalable systems that can bring those insights to life, creating tangible solutions. I'm excited not just to tackle complex challenges but also to leverage technology in ways that can genuinely change people’s lives for the better.

Favorite Course(s): CS 260 – Data Structures & Algorithms with Professor Boady, DSCI 471 – Applied Deep Learning with Professor Toutounchian

Clubs/Extracurricular Activities: Marketing Chair for Women In Computing Society (WiCS), Course Assistant for CCI, Member of National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

Co-ops I've done: R&D Software Developer Co-op at iPipline

Favorite thing/place at Drexel: the 9th Floor at CCI is a great spot if you need quiet, focus time!

When I'm not at Drexel, I'm... exploring the city with friends, or traveling to nearby states and exploring those!

When you are in Philadelphia, I think you should... Visit the Penn’s Landing waterfront; it’s my favorite part of the city so far.

Advice to new/incoming CCI students: The best thing you can do for yourself is to join clubs/participate in extracurricular activities. This will allow you to meet fellow Drexel students with similar interests as you. In terms of adjusting to the quarter system, make sure you stay on top of deadlines as those tend to sneak up on you. Weeks 2-3 are always around when the term starts to ramp up so try to be aware of that!

What is your dream job? Starting a company that aims to make technology more accessible to minority groups while offering comprehensive professional and personal development resources. Think of it as something along the lines of ColorStack or Edlyft, but with a special focus on international students in the U.S. This emphasis is crucial because, as international students in the tech field, we often have to navigate a less defined pathway.

Favorite Animated Character: Squidward

Bio

Hello everyone! My name is Yara, and I’m a fourth-year transfer student majoring in Data Science with a minor in Software Engineering. I'm deeply passionate about making tech accessible to underrepresented groups. I believe that everyone, regardless of their background or identity, should have equal opportunities to learn and thrive in the tech industry. I moved to Philly about 2 years ago, so I enjoy exploring the city with friends in my free time. This is my first year as a Dean's Ambassador, and I can’t wait to meet you all!
