Concentration Area and Certificate Program in Biomedical Technology Development
This concentration area and advanced certificate program aims to provide engineers with the comprehensive education and training necessary to succeed in careers in business, industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies involving biomedical technology development. The concentration in Biomedical Technology Development is a professional degree program and follows the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems' established procedures for a non-thesis option master's degree. Students interested in this concentration should develop a plan of study in consultation with the concentration coordinator, Dr. Kambiz Pourrezaei, before the beginning of the second term. The electives should also be chosen in consultation with the concentration coordinator. For professionals, the Biomedical Technology Development concentration is available as an advanced certificate program.
The proposed concentration area and certificate program aims to provide engineers with the comprehensive education and training necessary to succeed in careers in business, industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies involving biomedical technology development.
The need for well-designed and innovative medical technology is critical to the twin goals of improving the quality and reducing the cost of health care. Biomedical engineers can only rise to meet this need if they understand the socio-legal and business part of the equation, as well as the design and technical aspects of biomedical technology development.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Ability to design medical devices in response to poorly met or unmet clinical needs or problems.
- Ability to create medical devices in response to poorly met or unmet clinical needs or problems using appropriate technology.
- Ability to identify the economic development components related to taking a device from idea to market.
- Understanding of the risk management process and ability to apply this understanding to the lifecycle phases of a medical device.
- Understanding of, and ability to work with, appropriate regulatory requirements, objectives and existing standards.
The concentration area in Biomedical Technology Development is a professional degree program and follows the School's established procedures for a non-thesis option Master's degree.
Biomed Core Courses
Students who elect this concentration area will complete the basic core requirements in biomedical engineering consisting of 2 sequences – Medical Sciences I-II-III and Biosimulation I-II. The students will then complete 15 credits forming the core of the concentration area.

In addition to completing the 30 credits of core material, students can choose electives to complete the required 51 total credits. These electives are arranged in specific sets although there is no requirement that students choose their electives from a single set.
