Minor in Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Program

This 24 credit minor focuses on the basic competencies associated with helping people in recovery from serious mental illnesses. Students complete 15 credits of required coursework and nine elective credits. Students should consult with faculty in the Behavioral Health Counseling Program for advice in selecting electives that will best meet their educational and career goals. Students may begin coursework in this minor at any point in their undergraduate education.

What you'll learn

Students in this program will study:

  • basic therapeutic relationship building skills;
  • evidence-based practices for helping people in recovery from serious mental illnesses improve their ability to live, learn, work, and socialize successfully in the community;
  • how to help people understand the role of psychotropic medications in managing the symptoms of mental illness;
  • crisis intervention steps and methods.

What makes the Drexel Behavioral Health Counseling Psychiatric Minor program unique?

  • Classes meet once per week for three hours to allow time for interactive role-play practice and demonstration of subject matter.
  • Small class size allows for individualized attention to student skill acquisition.
  • Students engage in community based learning by conducting assessments with individuals receiving services at a provider agency.
  • This minor is exceptionally relevant to the recovery-oriented transformations taking place in behavioral health care today, yet it is difficult to find courses like this in most universities.

Career Opportunities

  • Students interested in working with adults with serious mental illnesses will find that psychiatric rehabilitation knowledge and skills are essential to promoting recovery and consequently will experience greater job satisfaction.
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners work as supported employment or education specialists, residential counselors, community rehabilitation program specialists, Assertive Community Treatment team members, peer counselors, and case managers.
