The Pearlstein Gallery invites exhibition proposals for Spring 2025*. Members of the Drexel community and public are invited to submit entries by November 15, 2024. Concepts will be reviewed by an exhibition committee; selected concepts will be invited to submit a full proposal. Artists, designers, curators, and independent organizers are invited to apply.
The Pearlstein Gallery is over 3,500 square feet with moveable walls that can be configured according to each exhibition. The scale of concepts can range from a single exhibition that fills the entire space, or an exhibition/installation that fills half the space. For this initial submission process, concepts do not include specified layouts. Submissions selected to submit full proposals will be provided with gallery specifications and invited to submit layouts for consideration.
Budget assessment is not part of this initial concept review. However, concepts should be submitted with the understanding that the Pearlstein Gallery has a limited exhibition budget. The gallery will dedicate its modest Spring 2025 funds and resources to personnel, a reception, exhibition signage, and standard installation costs. Other additional costs, including long-distance art shipping and transportation, framing, fabrication of exhibition furnishings, travel and accommodations for visiting artists, or other external costs, shall be undertaken by the proposer or exhibiting artists.
*Submitted proposals not selected for Spring 2025 may be considered for Summer 2025 slots
Criteria:
Proposal concepts will primarily be assessed for their relevance and fit for the Pearlstein Gallery’s annual and multi-year program schedules. A committee of Drexel faculty, students, and community members will review proposal concepts and make recommendations based on the following criteria:
(1) Connection to the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design and broader Drexel community. How well does the concept incorporate the applied arts disciplines of the Westphal College community? How does the concept reflect Drexel University’s commitment to innovation?
(2) Relevance to surrounding neighborhood communities and broader Philadelphia arts audiences. How does the concept reflect the interests of communities in West Philadelphia, including neighboring Powelton Village and Mantua?
(3) Suitability relative to annual and multi-year program scheduling. How does the concept fit into the annual schedule of exhibitions and multi-year schedule of planned projects?
(4) Quality of proposal concept. All complete proposals will be considered, however, special attention will be paid to those that are original, clear, and detailed.
About the Gallery:

A Certain Slant of Light: Dino Pelliccia, Bruce Pollock, and Stuart Rome
January 7- March 18, 2025
Pearlstein Gallery is pleased to announce A Certain Slant of Light, the first exhibition of 2025. This three-person show features significant works from influential Philadelphia artists: Stuart Rome, Dino Pelliccia, and Bruce Pollock. Although the work on view is wide-ranging in media–sculpture, painting and photography–it shares an interest in natural forms, an investigation into materiality, and a mastery of highly-honed craft. The exhibition spans four decades of process-oriented work from these artists who also share a long standing connection to the Drexel community.
Dino Pelliccia is showing large, new sculptural forms made from solid wood. Both free-standing and mobile, these monumental works are simultaneously dynamic and timeless. Bruce Pollock’s paintings on view are from his intricate Indigo series in shades of blue. These meditative and energetic works feature fractal and geometric patterns inspired by deep observation of nature. Stuart Rome’s compelling works explore vantage, scale, and texture to expand the possibilities of photography. His Oculus series of black and white images are taken from within giant redwoods and sequoias, portals to new perspectives. Each ask where we stand in our relationship to the Natural world and within these patterns might there be a bridge to that understanding.
A Certain Slant of Light contains over fifty works of art by these three artists, balanced throughout the entire gallery space. We invite you to experience this introspective retrospective centered on material craft and organic form.
A companion publication will include an essay by noted art writer and critic, Judith Stein, who has most recently written the book Eye of the Sixties about Dick Belamy.
A reception will be on Thursday January 16th, 2025 from 5-8pm.
