(S)Heroes Among Us
October 18, 2020
We are thrilled to be working in partnership with We Are the Seeds for (S)Heroes Among Us THIS Sunday! On October 18, 2020, three Philadelphia area artists, Priscilla Bell, Busta, and Leon Rainbow, will paint murals to the sounds of DJ Celeste Worl informed by Native music.
Jose Bustamante is an artist from Chia, Columbia who goes by the name “Busta.” Busta’s passion for urban art and their interest in artwork that reveals the complexity and beauty of the human form has influenced their work substantially.
In a classic sense, Busta has learned from master artists like Michelangelo, da Vinci, Velazquez, Rembrandt, and Rodin how paint can be used to give meaning and power to an image placed upon its canvas. This immortalizes the individual or scene that is being depicted.
On the other hand, during their experience as a graffiti artist, Busta has worked with images and texts in public places. As a result, their main influences have come from hip-hop culture and other social scenes, as well as Indigenous culture. Being raised around an Indigenous community called “Muisca” or “Chibcha,” helped Busta understand the spiritual aspect of painting and influenced the patterns and colors used within their work. For those reasons, Busta focuses heavily on colorful portraits, lettering, and typography as a form of personal artistic expression.
(S)Heroes Among Us will be live streamed on the Gallery’s Twitch channel at 1PM Sunday, October 18, 2020. Register for this free virtual event using the link in our bio!
