National First-Generation Day Celebration

During the first week of November, universities nationwide celebrate the resilient and thriving community of students who are first in their family to pursue a four-year degree in the United States.

Within the Drexel community, there is a village of first-gen students, faculty, and professional staff who are working to ensure that first-generation college students are supported and recognized for the unique insights and experiences that they bring with them to campus.

In collaboration with Dragon’s First, Drexel’s club for first-generation students, and other allies on campus, we host a variety of events and activities honoring National First-Generation Day.

Why celebrate in the first week of November?

November 8 marks the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. This historic legislation established financial aid programs to help fund students’ educations and made vital investments in colleges and universities across the country. Most importantly, it helped open the door for more individuals to become the first in their families to earn a college degree.

For this reason, universities across the nation celebrate National First-Generation College Celebration Day on or around November 8 each year.
