These shoes, purchased by Philadelphia resident Mrs. Upton S. Sullivan, were made by London shoe and boot manufacturer Hook, Knowles & Co. The firm would not only regularly advertise their large presence among American shoppers, but also their 1902 royal warrant as shoe and boot manufacturer to Queen Mary, then the Princess of Wales.
