Information on Meningococcal Meningitis
An outbreak of several cases of meningococcal meningitis at a local university has recently been highlighted by the news media. These cases have involved a rare type of meningococcal meningitis called serotype B. Outbreaks of serogroup B meningococcal disease are rare. There have been no cases of serogroup B meningitis on Drexel’s campus.
All Drexel students living in campus housing are required by the state of Pennsylvania to be immunized against meningococcal meningitis with the Mennamune or Menactra vaccine.
In addition to immunization, you can help prevent the spread of disease by increasing hygienic practices (frequent handwashing and covering your mouth when you cough) and not sharing drinking glasses, eating utensils, smoking materials and other items.
If you are concerned about being exposed to meningitis, please click on the links below.
If you experience symptoms of bacterial meningitis such as high fever, severe headache, lethargy, neck stiffness or sensitivity to light you should go to the Student Health Center or call 215-220-4700. If it is after hours or on the weekend, you should go to the nearest emergency room.
