Naloxone Outreach Project

Naloxone Outreach Project

This project aims to help reduce the number of opioid-related overdoses in Berks County by increasing the amount of naloxone distributed to the area.

Learn More

We will be staffing information tables in areas of high need to try to increase the amount of Naloxone kits distributed in the area. During these events, we hope to spread awareness about opioid-related overdoses in Berks County and possibly do blood pressure screenings as well. We plan to work closely with COCA and other community organizations to help address opioid-related overdoses in Berks County. We also hope to work with local health care providers to spread naloxone resources to more health clinics in the area.

Vaccine Hesitancy

Vaccine Hesitancy

This project works to counsel patients in the OB/GYN waiting room regarding the importance of vaccinations in pregnancy. Students administer a brief questionnaire regarding vaccinations and gear discussions based on scoring (opposed/unsure/agreeable). We then provide information/follow-up as needed.

No One Dies Alone (NODA)

NODA works with the Reading Hospital and local community to connect with patients who are in the active process of passing away and who may not have anyone else there with them.

Volunteers will spend time with patients as a comfort partner and will be present to listen to their stories, talk with them, and/or provide basic comfort measures. The project’s goal is to help the patients, their families, and other staff find comfort in the fact that these individuals will not be alone in passing.

Neurology Screening (Project at HRM Clinic)

The HOP Neurology Screening Project offers neurological and neuromuscular exams as part of the Hope Rescue Mission Clinic.

Learn More

Given that obesity is very prevalent in Berks County, we hope to screen for the many neurological complications associated with disorders caused by obesity such as diabetes and hypertension. These debilitating complications include radiculopathy, diabetic neuropathy and wounds, seizures, sciatica, and neuromuscular dysfunction. We believe that these conditions are often either missed or left untreated and by offering screening, we hope to identify these issues and direct patients to the care they deserve. In addition to screening, the project will also provide resources to help manage and treat these conditions. Medical students will be providing screenings under the supervision of physicians and will have the opportunity to master an essential examination.

The HOP Mobile Screening Eye Examination Project (SEE) provides free eye screenings at Hope Rescue Mission and other sites around Berks County.

Learn More
