Global Health Education Student Experiences Nardos Makonnen

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)
Summer 2016

"I participated in a research project by analyzing the rate of glove perforation in emergency vs. elective surgeries in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia."

"To get started with this project, I reached out to a physician that is involved in research at Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences, and asked for ways I could help out. We discussed a project that combines both of our interests. The University has affiliated hospitals that are some of the largest hospitals in the country. This made it the ideal place to conduct research."

"Before I arrived in Addis Ababa, we wrote and submitted a research proposal that was to be reviewed by the University. Once it was approved, we were able to start conducting the research. Since it is a relatively straight forward project, there was not many issues we encountered. The staff at the hospitals were incredibly welcoming, and they were deeply interested in the study."
