For the second consecutive year, the students of Drexel’s Maternal and Child Health Student Organization (MCHSO) came together to spread holiday cheer to families in Philadelphia. As they did last year, the students created personalized holiday cards during the end of the fall quarter. This year, the cards were distributed to families at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, a partnership of Drexel University and Tower Health, is a 188-bed children’s hospital that provides exceptional pediatric care to children from throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.

"MCHSO was happy to turn a simple gesture into a powerful source of joy and connection.” - Tahiyya Khan

St. Chris has been providing care since 1875 and has a rich history of clinical and academic achievements. Located in North Philadelphia, in one of the most poverty-stricken congressional districts in the country, St. Chris serves the highest percentage of Medicaid patients of any pediatric academic medical center in the United States. Addressing the social determinants of health and providing patient- and family-centered care is central to the mission of St. Christopher’s.

The students of MCHSO recognize the tremendous needs within the community served by St. Christopher’s and wanted to find a way to contribute during the holiday season.

“Sending heartfelt holiday cards to children and their families who may be unable to celebrate the holidays at home can bring comfort," said Tahiyya Khan, 2023 MCHSO President (Interim) and Event Coordinator. "MCHSO was happy to turn a simple gesture into a powerful source of joy and connection.”

The cards were handed out to children at the hospital’s holiday party in December, and MCHSO members hope they brought smiles to young patients and their families!
