At the start of the fall term the Maternal and Child Health Student Organization (MCHSO) wasted no time coordinating opportunities to increase student engagement and awareness of important topics in maternal and child health (MCH).

MCHSO’s first event of the 2022-2023 academic year brought students together to meet each other, learn more about the group, and discuss important MCH topics. Following an initial introduction of the group and welcoming of new members, attendees played a trivia game focused MCH topics. Students enjoyed learning more about MCH and discussing important topics such as the Title V Block Grant, Postpartum Medicaid Expansion, Maternal Mortality, Reproductive Justice, and more.

Following the game, all attendees received a fun grocery food bag prize! Students shared that they enjoyed coming together to learn more about MCH. The grocery food bags were a hit among attendees as well and students enjoyed the variety of the themed bags.

MCHSO President, Markolline Forkpa, MPH' 22 and former MCH Trainee, commented on the event and MCHSO’s goal of creating fun ways for students to come together to expand their knowledge in MCH. “With each group engagement we really strive to tie in an educational component...This is important. Trivia was an organic way to bring together fun and learning."

"It’s encouraging to see so many MCH trainees and students come together and enjoy this event," added Forkpa.

The following week, MCHSO brought together Drexel students as a team to participate in the Friends in Pink 5K Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Friends in Pink is a nonprofit group that was formed in 2009 and raises funds for those who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer in the Roxborough and Manayunk Communities.

"Early on a Saturday morning, the MCHSO team showed up to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness, and each member did so with a smile on their face. It says a lot about their passion for MCH. I am so proud to be a part of that." - MCHSO President Markolline Forkpa

MCHSO sponsored 15 students to join the walk and spots filled quickly! Students joined the team for a variety of reasons and shared that they enjoyed coming together on a Saturday morning to enjoy the outdoors together and walk for such an important cause.

“I decided to walk with MCHSO as a way to honor my mom, who started chemotherapy this past month. Cancer continues to affect so many people and I was just so thankful that MCHSO organized this opportunity. I truly appreciated spending time with fellow students and walking for a cause that’s so important and timely for me and I look forward to participating as an alumni next year!” said Hope Vega, RDN, MCH trainee and an MPH student in the Department of Community Health and Prevention.
