James Garrow
Drexel University, Class of 2001
"I joined the Sociology program at Drexel after finding myself unfulfilled by the rote memorization required by
the Engineering curriculum. The Sociology program allowedme to explore topics not addressed anywhere else
in the University, while providing an environment which encouraging questioning and creative thinking. This is
not to say that I did not learn core concepts of sociology and how to apply those concepts; I was able to marry
creative thinking with a genuinely marketable applied skill set. I was hired directly after graduation. As I grew in
my career, I was able to move to new, more interesting fields as needed because I was not pigeon-holed from
a limited and concentrated learning experience. By learning how to think critically and creatively, I was able to
succeed in the field I truly enjoy, without being hamstrung by any poorly made choices along the way. I
currently work for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness
Program as the Health Communications Specialist. I am in charge of communicating with the public, critical
response partners and the health care community in preparation for, and during a public health emergency."
