Dr. Dario Salvucci receives award for paper at CHI 2013

April 24, 2013 — Dr. Dario Salvucci, professor of computer science, received a Best of CHI Honorable Mention for his paper titled "Distraction Beyond the Driver: Predicting the Effects of In-Vehicle Interaction on Surrounding Traffic.” The paper describes new work on predicting driver distraction using computational cognitive modeling. In particular, the work uses computational models of driver behavior to simulate both distracted and non-distracted drivers navigating in a single virtual environment, showing how even one distracted driver can produce negative downstream effects for other nearby drivers and vehicles. The paper will be presented at the ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Paris, France, April 27 - May 2, 2013.
