The Growth and Resilience of Researching Health in Cities: Inside Our Latest Annual Report

Alex Quistberg Presenting Research

While the field of urban health (and public health in general) has been turbulent over the last year, we have also seen considerable advancements in working to make cities healthier and more equitable places to live.

The faculty, staff, and students of the Urban Health Collaborative (UHC) worked hard to advance this mission in the 2024-2025 academic year, and we’re now thrilled to be able to share the fruits of those labors. Through the work of our team, we’ve sustained an environment that values rigorous science, open discussion and debate, and translation of what we know into meaningful actions.

Some highlights from the year include:

40 Active Grants

Such as:

  • SALURBAL-Climate: a five-year initiative that integrates a unique, large-scale urban data platform with research and policy partnerships to generate actionable evidence on how climate change shapes health outcomes across Latin America.
  • The Food & Communities Project: studying how COVID-19 worsened existing food access for low-income families, and highlights how structural and administrative burdens continue, despite some pandemic-related improvements.

5 New Grants Awarded

Including:

  • A new, 5-year and $3.9 million grant supporting the YUCA (Youth in Urban Centres across the Americas: Understanding and addressing heat impacts on mental health) project, joining an international team of researchers based in Canada, Mexico, and Argentina.
