Congratulations, Drexel Dragons
Dear Students and Colleagues,
This past week has been filled with several proud moments for the entire Drexel community and especially for the University’s student-athletes, who earned their place in national competition during a grueling season of pandemic restrictions.
We are incredibly proud of our men’s and women’s basketball teams. The men’s team took on top seed University of Illinois on Friday and our women’s team played the No. 3 seed University of Georgia this afternoon. Both teams played well and displayed a tremendous amount of grit and determination in playing top programs. Despite both falling in the first round, we are beyond grateful for the pride that both teams instilled in our campus community, as they reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996 for the men and 2009 for the women. Having both the men’s and women’s teams compete in the NCAA Tournament during the same year was also a first for Drexel.
The Drexel University wrestling team also finished a successful season by placing fifth at the 117th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships in Manheim, Pa. That paved the way for six Dragon wrestlers to compete in the 2021 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., which represented a program high.
We want to congratulate all three head coaches, Amy Mallon, Zach Spiker and Matt Azevedo, as well as their assistant coaches, on a great year. It also has been a banner year for Director of Athletics Eric Zillmer, as he concludes his exceptional tenure in Drexel athletics.
And to the players most of all, our heartiest thanks for the dance! We are so proud of all of you!
Sincerely,
John Fry
