Law Students Run for Justice at Inaugural 5K Event
On Oct. 10, current students and alumni of the Earle Mack School of Law donned sweats and running shoes to take part in the inaugural "Justice for All! 5K" race at Memorial Hall in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park.
Joseph Foley, a 24-year-old 2L, finished in second place.
The fundraiser benefitted Community Legal Services of Philadelphia and its mission to provide low-income residents of the city with advice and representation in civil legal matters.
"There is a tremendous need for legal representation among this population," said 3L Amy Berger, who also volunteered at the event.
"I have seen some of the work CLS does in Family Court while interning with the Support Center for Child Advocates, and I know how dedicated they are to their clients," added Berger, who plans on practicing family or criminal law in a public interest setting once she graduates.
"So many times this population misses out on legal entitlements because they cannot afford counsel, or they are only able to obtain limited assistance in the form drafting of legal documents and/or legal advice over the phone due to a lack of resources," said Berger, whose previous public interest experiences shined a light on how essential funding is for these organizations.
