Poets are “popping up” in response to the work of artist Bill Walton, whose sculptures are featured in the current Leonard Pearlstein Gallery exhibition artist to artist. In a collaboration between the Pearlstein Gallery and Drexel’s Department of English and Philosophy, a Pop-up Poetry Residency gives creative writing students an opportunity to engage with the lyrical show, to write in the gallery, and to share their works in a free-to-the-public reading on Thursday, November 20 at 7:00pm in the Pearlstein Gallery (3401 Filbert Street). The reading will be followed with a light public reception.

Walton’s small assemblage sculptures pay precise attention to weight, material and texture, and often juxtapose natural and manmade materials. The poetic show serves as a place of origin for diverse creative responses from both Drexel and Penn student writers. The residency is an opportunity for students to engage with one another across campuses, with the public, and with their writing practices in a new way.

Prior to the reading on November 20, a 6:00pm free-to-the-public workshop will focus on found poetry methods inspired by Walton’s works.
