Dance's Snapshots

January 24, 2012 — The Dance Program will present two exciting programs this winter with Drexel Dance Ensemble’s Snapshots, and FreshDance’s New Encounters. The concerts will feature over 80 dancers and the choreography of dance professionals, faculty, and students.

Snapshots will feature pieces choreographed by Meredith Rainey, former principal dancer for the Pennsylvania Ballet and director of Carbon Dance Theatre, and Clyde Evans, director of Chosen Dance Company. Olive Prince, Dance Professor, has remounted Sea of Glass, a piece inspired by the glass-mobile artwork of Philadelphia artist Summer Yates, and set to a score composed by Music Industry student Brandon Bost. Sea of Glass premiered last summer at the Singapore Youth Festival to acclaim, and this winter’s concert will include an art installation by Summer Yates exploring reflections, unions and breaking bonds.

The freshman dance ensemble, FreshDance, will be presenting New Encounters. Works will include a new original ballet choreographed by Dance Professor Lucinda Lea, and a modern piece by FreshDance Assistant Director, Mina Estrada, that explores feminine ideals and the female form in a variety of environments. Dance Program Director, Dr. Miriam Giguere, has created a dance responding to a video of an orchestral flash mob in the Copenhagen train station. FreshDance will also perform two remounted works by student choreographers, Karlee Markarian and Caroline O’Brien.

The Dance Ensemble’s concert, Snapshots, will be performed Thursday through Saturday, February 2nd-4th, at 8:00 PM. FreshDance’s New Encounters, plays on Saturday, February 4th at 3:00 PM and Sunday, February 5th at 1:00 PM. Tickets for each performance are $10 for the general public, and $5 for students with ID. Tickets are available at www.danceboxoffice.com or by calling 215-895-2787. Both concerts will take place in the Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Sts.). February 4th is also Drexel Dance Day. All high school students interested in studying dance are invited to join us for a day of technique classes, presentations and a performance.
