Music & Dance

September 22, 2010 —

Students Playing SaxophonesOver two thousand students from all of Drexel’s Colleges and Schools perform in at least one of our 19 music, theatre or dance ensembles each year. Their upcoming schedule of performances is extensive, and our students’ talent and commitment is impressive. We’ll begin the season with Barbara Sandonato, the Pennsylvania Ballet’s first prima ballerina who will be demonstrating and speaking to the repertory of her teacher, the great George Balanchine on October 14th. Other highlights of the fall include the 70-member Drexel Concert Band performing works of Valerie Coleman and Harold Burgmayer written specifically for the group.

Winter’s lineup includes the Winter Dance Concert, REFLECTED. For the concert, the Dance Ensemble will welcome Nora Gibson as a guest choreographer. Gibson dances for ClancyWorks Dance Company in D.C., and is a Philadelphia-based dancer and choreographer whose training spans classical ballet to post-modern improvisation. In February, one of Drexel University’s most popular traditions, The Madrigal Dinner, returns for its 21st year. Transforming the Great Court into a nobleman’s palace, ladies and lords will be entertained by storytellers and jesters while dinner is served by student performers in Renaissance attire. In March, the Jazz Orchestra will share the stage with the nationally-renowned Spelman College Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Professor Joseph Jennings for Jazz Extravaganza XII, an evening dedicated to the greats of jazz. Rounding out the winter schedule, the University Chorus will be joined by professional players and soloists in a full performance of Mendelssohn’s epic oratorio “Elijah”.

Spring will bring a new event to our exciting line-up with the first ever Spring Music Festival. The Fusion Band, Mediterranean Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Rock Ensemble, and Guitar Ensemble will celebrate the last day of spring term classes in one rockin’ concert. Finally, the voices of the University Chorus and Chamber Singers will bring the year to a close when they perform the glorious music of the masters in their annual Great Court Concert.
