October 1, 2009 — Philip Freelon, FAIA, whose firm has been awarded the task of designing the new Smithsonian Museum of African-American History, will give the talk New Museum Projects-Integrating Architecture and Theme on October 1st at 6:30 PM in the Mandell Theater. Since 1990 the Freelon Group, established by Freelon, has specialized in designs for higher education, science and technology. The firm has built its reputation through designs for several museums commemorating the Civil Rights Movement and the African-American experience. Freelon was named "2008 Designer of the Year' by top trade magazine Contract and this year was awarded the AIA's Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture. His work has been widely cataloged in publications including Architecture and Metropolitan Home.
