Dance Lecture to Kickoff Limon Centennial
October 17, 2007 —
Join the Dance Program at Westphal College for the first of this yearÕs events celebrating the life and work of modern dance pioneer Jose Limon. A Glimpse into History: The Humphrey-Limon Tradition will feature a lecture by Ann Vachon, a screening of excerpts from her documentary film, Limon: A Life Beyond Words, and a live dance demonstration by noted Philadelphia dancer, Janet Pilla.
Ann Vachon, former principal company member and soloist from the Limon company, will discuss the life and work of JosŽ Limon and show excerpts from her award-winning documentary Limon, A Life Beyond Words. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Vachon performed with the Company from 1958-75, and in 1981, she founded Dance Conduit, a Philadelphia-based company that presented historic reconstructions of Limon and the works of Doris Humphrey, LimonÕs partner and collaborator. Ann currently serves as Institute Director for The Limon Institute. The documentary film, directed by Malachi Roth and produced by Vachon, has appeared at festivals worldwide, including the Montreal International Festival of Films on Art, and has won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at Ajijic Festival Internacionale de Cine in Mexico.
The event will also feature a live demonstration by Philadelphia dancer Janet Pilla, who will perform LimonÕs masterwork Primavera. Pilla, a former soloist for Dance Conduit, has performed with numerous Philadelphia choreographers and companies, and has taught Limon repertory and served as an adjunct faculty member for several universities. Primavera is an excerpt from LimonÕs larger work Dances for Isadora, a series of solos evoking different periods of the life of Isadora Duncan. This event is FREE and open to the public. Seating will be arranged on a first-come, first-served basis.
