Guest Lecture: Another Look at Utamaro's Images of Women

Utamaro's WomanJoin Dr. Julie Davis, Assistant Professor of East Asian Art at the University of Pennsylvania, for a lecture about Utamaro?s Japanese wood blocks.

Since 2002, Dr. Davis has been teaching the arts of East Asia from 1600 to the present at UPenn. Her primary research concerns Ukiyo-e, the ?images of the floating world?, and her book on Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) will be published by Reakton Books in 2007. Her recent publications include, among others, an article on Utamaro in the anthology The Artist as Professional in Japan (Stanford University Press, 2004), and an essay on Utamaro and his contemporaries in the Hotei Encyclopedia of Japanese Woodblock Prints (Hotei Books, 2005).
