In August 2021, Nike and tennis superstar Serena Williams will launch the inaugural collection from the Serena Williams Design Crew (SWDC), its innovative apprenticeship promoting diversity in design. Mika Osoro (’09), a graduate of the Drexel Westphal Master’s program in Fashion Design, served as Footwear Materials Designer on the collection.

Launched in 2019, the SWDC brought together 10 up-and-coming designers, each specializing in their own discipline, to create a new era where diverse perspectives are celebrated and empowered. Apprentices completed a six-month curriculum with Nike mentors, then worked directly with Serena to develop a women’s performance and lifestyle collection.

In a launch video to debut the SWDC designers, Mika describes the aesthetic of a footwear piece from the collection as “the 90s, mixed with the present, mixed with the future.”
