Drexel University’s Department of Performing Arts presents SUPPER, People on the Move! performed by the Cardell Dance Theater with choreography by Philadelphia-based artist Silvana Cardell. SUPPER, People on the Move! explores the complex experience of dislocation. The dance is an examination of the human experience of all people on the move, looking for new horizons. Physical bodies moving between physical places define migration, and the immigrant journey is at the heart of humanity’s ability to survive. From this rich and fertile history, Cardell creates evocative forms of movement—abstract, personal, universal—performed with unrelenting physicality and striking moments of beauty. Featuring eight dancers of supreme ability and daring physicality, the highly regarded music of Nick Zammuto, and special guest artists, SUPPER is an exhilarating event.

Each performance of SUPPER culminates in a communal feast with a moderated discussion on the themes of migration and immigration. Guests are also welcome in the lobby one-hour prior to the show to experience Portraits of People on The Move, a companion exhibition chronicling stories of Philadelphia-area immigrants, curated by Jennifer Baker.

SUPPER first premiered in 2015 at the Icebox Project Space at Crane Arts in Philadelphia. According to Jim Rutter of The Inquirer: “‘Supper’ tells riveting stories of immigration…People on the Move pays homage to these stories in a harrowing, captivating dance theater piece. Filled with symbolism and metaphor, it forcefully conveys the emotional power of the psychological and physical perils that can plague an immigrant's passage. It's a journey that is worth taking once at Crane Arts, repeating – and restaging.” Drexel’s Department of Performing Arts is excited to bring back to Philadelphia such a moving and relevant work.

About Cardell Dance Theater
The company was founded as S. Cardell Danza in 1992 in Buenos Aires, based at Sala Ana Itelman and performing in major dance festivals sponsored by Red Latinoamericana de Productores de Danza, Fundacion Antorchas, Instituto Nacional del Teatro and Secretaria de Cultura de la Nacion, among others. Relocated to Philadelphia in 2009 and renamed as Cardell Dance Theater, the company presented work at the Harold Prince Theater at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, The Painted Bride, The Wilma Theater, Christ Church Neighborhood Theater, The Arts Bank, the CEC Theater, Georgian Court University, Swarthmore College, Mt Vernon Dance Space, Falls Bridge -Philly PARD, New Dance House, New Festival, SDHS at The University of the Arts, The Ice Box at the Crane Building, and at La MaMa in New York City. Cardell Dance Theater has toured with support from the Mid Atlantic Foundation and through a NEFA – National Dance Project touring grant.
