Belén Maya: Fall Dance Lecture

October 11, 2017

Acclaimed modernist Flamenco artist Belén Maya will deliver a public lecture and demonstration, accompanied by live music, at 6:00PM in the Mandell Theater on Thursday October  19th entitled Creative process: transformation, collaboration and choreography in contemporary Flamenco. This event is free and open to the public. Maya burst onto the scene in Carlos Sauro's masterpiece film, FLAMENCO, and she was the winner of the Critics’ Choice Prize at the 2014 Jerez Flamenco Festival, the top flamenco festival in the world.  She will speak to her pioneering work  that constitutes a new contemporary art form and her knowledgeable and evolved view of the history and traditions of the flamenco art form.

A few tickets still remain for the premiere of Maya’s celebrated one woman show, Romnia, in the Black Box Theater this Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th at 8PM. Romni, or woman in the romani language, takes a complex and deeply emotive look into the historical narrative of the Gypsy woman, countering joy with the courage to survive. You can purchase your tickets in advance here, or at the door with credit card or check only.

Belén Maya's residence is made possible through a grant from the Rankin Scholar in Residence Program, supported by donations from alumni and colleagues of Dean Rankin to inspire students and to deepen our understanding of developments and thinking within our diverse design, media, and art fields. Dance Program Director, Valerie Ifill, and Dean Allen Sabinson organized this residency.

If you’d like to support the Rankin program, you can make a contribution here or by mailing a donation payable to Drexel University addressed to: Dean Sabinson // URBN Center, 3501 Market Street 1A20A // Philadelphia PA, 19104. For more information please contact Nik Kozel at ngk25@drexel.edu
