where the artists are (in their studios)
December 19, 2017
where the artists are (in their studios) brings sculpture by Lewis Colburn, drawings and paintings by Anda Dubinskis, and drawings by Mark Stockton together for an exhibition at the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, on view January 16 through March 18, 2018. Through examining several years of each artists' practice, this exhibition explores the intellectual and technical characteristics that distinguish their daily working routines; what draws them into their studios, excites them, and ultimately keeps them there? Studio work is how artists spend their days, and this show closely examines how each artist's uniquely different experiments, frustrations, discoveries, and digressions ultimately grow into cohesive bodies of work.
Lewis Colburn, Art & Art History Professor, received degrees in studio art and Russian language from St. Olaf College, and an MFA in sculpture from Syracuse University. Colburn's work has been exhibited internationally, most recently in Guangzhou, China. Stateside Colburn has exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, the School 33 Art Center in Baltimore, and the historic Glen Foerd mansion in Philadelphia. Colburn is a member of NAPOLEON, an artist-run project space in Philadelphia's Rollins Building.
Anda Dubinskis, Art & Art History Professor, has won numerous awards for her figurative painting, including two Painting Fellowships from the National Endowment on the Arts; two Painting Fellowships and an SOS grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; and a Leeway Grant for Achievement in Painting. She received her MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She was a resident artist at the MacDowell Artist Colony in New Hampshire, was awarded a residency at La Napoule, France, and spent a month painting and drawing at the Ballinglen Arts Program in Ballycastle, Ireland. Her work has been exhibited extensively both locally and nationally and she is represented by the Fleisher-Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia.
Mark Stockton, Art & Art History Professor, has exhibited nationally and internationally, with past exhibitions featuring his work in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, London, and Beijing. Originally from the West Coast, he received his BFA from Oregon State University in 1996 and his MFA in Painting and Drawing from Syracuse University in 2000. Stockton is an active member of the artist collective and gallery, Vox Populi. His work can be seen nearby in The West Collection (Oaks, PA), where he was given a purchase award in 2012, and can also be found in many other private collections.
