Coffee & Jazz

April 24, 2017

Get ready to sit back, relax, and enjoy the sultry sounds of Drexel's Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Naturally Sharp, as they serenade you in the City View Room against the backdrop of Philadelphia’s skyline. For this 11th annual Coffee & Jazz Concert, led by Dr. Stephen Powell, vocalists will open the evening with their own solo renditions of notable favorites I've Got You Under My Skin, Someone to Watch Over Me, For Once in My Life, and Feelin' Good, to name just a few.

Accompanied by a professional drummer, Naturally Sharp will then follow with their full twelve voice ensemble in a program of a variety of big-band standards and classic favorites. Dr. Powell, who selects the collectively performed titles, stated, "I want pieces that will challenge them, but are tailored to their voices. I also want to make sure that singers who have been in the group for a long time (our two seniors have both been in the group for four years) are constantly getting new music to expand their repertoire."

This year Naturally Sharp is comprised of vocalists from our Graphic Design and Music Industry programs, and from the Colleges of Nursing, Engineering, Arts & Sciences, and Business, as well as Drexel’s Culinary Arts Program. Selected through auditions, the Naturally Sharp ensemble performs up to 12 concerts on- and off-campus each year. For more information and to listen to audio recordings, visit their website here
