Jazz Orchestra at Clef Club March 7, 2013 The Spelman College Jazz Ensemble and the Drexel University Jazz Orchestra will present Jazz Extravaganza XIV on Thursday, March 14th at 7:30 PM at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz, located at 738 South Broad Street. This is an annual concert of music featuring compositions made famous by masters of the jazz idiom. This year’s concert, with a theme of “Celebration,” will feature a tribute to Spelman College Jazz Ensemble director Joseph Jennings, who is retiring this year. The Spelman Ensemble, from the college for women in Atlanta, Georgia, will feature the music of John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock, and Horace Silver, among others. The Drexel University Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. George L. Starks, Jr., will feature the music of Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Duke Pearson, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Oliver Nelson. The event is free and open to the public.
