Summer High School Program Recap

This past month, 126 talented high school students from all over the United States lived on Drexel’s campus, attended classes taught by our faculty members, went sightseeing in Philadelphia and created projects as part of our Summer High School programs in Architecture, Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising, Interior Design and Music Industry.
Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising faculty led 34 high school summer students through a busy two weeks, braving mid-July temperatures to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Punk exhibit. The students learned how to silk screen t-shirts at the Fabric Workshop and worked with Design & Merchandising students in the in our Summer Visual Merchandising Class to create exhibits and display fashion exhibits in the URBN Center Lobby.
The 37 high school students in the two-week residential Architecture and Interior Design Summer High School programs visited design firms and worked in our studios and computer labs to create their own original designs, which they presented to a professional jury during the final days of the program. The Music Industry Summer High School program enrolled 55 students in an intensive one-week schedule that included activities such as hands-on digital audio and mix production lessons, and guest lectures from industry professionals including Mark Schulz, Executive Director of the Philadelphia chapter of the Recording Academy.
Drexel Music Industry Professor Darren Walters says his department’s summer program gave high school students an invaluable sneak peek at the resources available to those enrolled in our Music Industry classes. “Our faculty teaches the summer program and draws coursework from the undergraduate curriculum that addresses music recording, production, marketing, management, publishing and more,” Walters explains.
