Web Development Creates Fire Safety App

November 9, 2012

The Philadelphia Fire Department was eager to create a fire prevention and safety app for smart phones in order to share information that can saves lives so they came to our Web Development and Interaction Design program to make it happen. Working under a tight budget and deadline, seniors Darielle Brown-Davis and Jordan Stewart designed and developed the app under the guidance of professors Jervis Thompson and Troy Finamore.  The app project was supported through The Kal & Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies and Drexel's Department of Public Safety.

News coverage of the app was first broadcast on ABC's channel 6 and was followed the next day by a press conference that garnered coverage on NBC 10, FOX 29, CW Philly 57 and the Daily News.  The app features many critical fire prevention tips including hospital and fire station locators, first escape plans, smoke detector installations, upkeep information, and more. Some of the coolest features are a live feed of the fire department's dispatch calls and a quick find tool that allows you to search through the dozens of features. Our team created a web-based app that is optimized of Apple iOS systems and can be downloaded at www.freedomfromfire.com
