Local Music Day
May 14, 2012
Music Industry senior Monika Julien created the organization Loves Local Music in an effort to promote the local music scene and support Philadelphia's cultural economy. The organization’s first event is Philadelphia Local Music Day, which has area business dedicating Saturday, May 12th to playing local artists' music in their stores. The bands featured in Philadelphia Local Music Day include Cheers Elephant, Work Drugs, Bandname, Buried Beds and The Extraordinaires. Area businesses including Johnny Brenda’s, The Rocket Cat, Repo Records, Federal Donuts, The Lola Bean and others will play these artists throughout the day.
After her initial accomplishments, Monika continued her hard work and landed a feature story in WXPN's The Key, which you can read here. The WXPN story led the station to incorporate all five bands featured in Philadelphia Local Music Day into its on-air programming on the 12th. Monika is a former WKDU program director who still hosts a weekly ska program on the station called University Goes Ska. Congratulations to Monika and be sure to listen closely this Saturday as some of Philadelphia's best bands will be playing all over the city thanks to her hard work.
