Sandhini Poddar, Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Guggenheim Museum, will discuss the vibrant contemporary Indian art scene on Tuesday, February 8th at 5:30 PM in Ruth Auditorium (Nesbitt 125, 33rd and Market Sts). This lecture will focus on recent works by Indian artists manipulating traditional media, film and video. Sandhini will discuss how video artists such as Amar Kanwar, still ‘undiscovered’ in the United States, are changing the trajectory of global contemporary art and how institutions such as the Guggenheim are engaging themselves in this new art world.

Sandhini grew up in Mumbai and was educated there and in New York.  She has curated a number of major Asian art exhibits at the Guggenheim: Anish Kapoor: Memory, a commissioned project for Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin (2008), which was exhibited at the Guggenheim, New York in 2009–10 and as assistant curator for Cai Guo-Qiang: I Want to Believe (2008–09) and The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860–1989 (2009). Her current exhibition project is Being Singular Plural: Moving Images from India, which was recently at Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin and will be traveling in an expanded format to the Guggenheim, New York in early 2012.
