Stylish Phils Ballgirls
April 20, 2011
Macy's and the NL East Champion Phillies teamed up to discover the next MVP of fashion design with the Macy's Phillies Ballgirls Uniform Design Challenge. When the final votes were in, Fashion Design student Jessica Mintz was the winner for her sporty-chic design inspired by the traditional Phillies pinstripe uniform with a twist -- a flattering silhouette that will fit many body types.
Jessica’s design was in competition with 15 other finalists at a live runway show at Macy’s Center City judged by a panel of celebrities. Jessica’s pinstriped design will be the new ballgirl uniform to be worn during community appearances throughout the 2011 season and is being considered as part of the new Phillies Ballgirl fashion line.
“They were looking for something fresh, clean, modern, and easy to travel in, so I created just that,” said Jessica. “I used a spandex-like stretch jersey material for the shell of the garment, and I lined it with a tricot fabric. The garment is easy to move in and does not wrinkle. It is also very wearable and appropriate for the activities that the ballgirls participate in and the appearances that they make.”
Jessica credits her classes in sportswear and swimwear for helping her most with the design. She was using a stretch material similar to that of swimsuits, so special machines were needed and Professor Lisa Hayes taught her how to use the stay stitch and cover stitch machines. Professor Juanita Phillips helped Jessica with the patternmaking so the flounce on the bottom of the uniform would fall correctly.
