Theatre at Drexel
September 22, 2010
Our Theatre program keeps busy all year with performances at the Mandell and intimate studio productions. This year’s line-up is shaping up to be as exciting as ever. We will start with the “Summer Studio of Written Plays” on Thursday, September 23rd and Friday, September 24th at 7 PM in Mandell Theater. Students will perform four plays, three short comedies and a longer play, which tackles the issues of teenage suicide, loss of a parent, and friendships, written by Screenwriting & Playwriting students John Barr, Brian Clores, Ashley Otis and David Sanders. The plays will be directed by Kevin Glaccum, Artistic Director of Azuka Theatre, with Dramaturgy by Screenwriting & Playwriting Professor Bruce Graham. Please join us for a reception with the Drexel Players as well as tours of the Mandell theater following Friday’s performance.
In November, students will work with three-time Barrymore award winning 11th Hour Theatre Company for a production of Jonathan Larsen’s ground-breaking RENT. Auditions for RENT will be held on Saturday, October 2nd from Noon to 3 PM in the Mandell Theater. Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, October 5th. For auditions, students should bring a resume and headshot, and will need to prepare monologues of two of the short selections from the show. Please contact Nick Anselmo at nick.anselmo@drexel.edu for further information on what’s required to audition. Also on October 5th, the Mandell Professional Artists in Residence Project will host a meet and greet with 11th Hour Theatre Company at Noon in the Mandell Theater. Come and enjoy free pizza while chatting with the talented folks from of one of the hottest up and coming theater companies in Philadelphia and learn how you can become involved with the show.
Auditions for The Fall Director’s Lab will be held on Sunday, October 3rd from 6 – 10 PM in the Mandell Theater. Auditions will be cold readings from provided scripts. There are six separate short pieces in the show that will be cast. Rehearsal schedules will be built around the availability of each cast with performances December 2nd- 4th. In February, the Drexel Players will present a fast-paced, new take on Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town. The play is an emotional drama about everyday people in an average early twentieth century American town. In May, the Players will perform Noises Off, Michael Frayn’s hilarious farce about life in the theater. Noises Off features a play within a play showing what happens when off-stage chaos affects on-stage performance. And, our popular open mic Late Night Series returns every Thursday night in the Creese Center. Click here [PDF] for more information about performances or how to get involved.
