An Evening with Chuck Barris

May 2, 2007

Chuck Barris

Find out why Barris chose Drexel after sampling 5 other colleges and how his Drexel education prepared him to become a multi-millionaire, television legend and CIA agent!

Chuck Barris '53, Hon. '01, a Philadelphia native and television legend, sometimes called the "godfather of reality television" is known for creating numerous hit shows such as The Gong Show, The Dating Game, and The Newlywed Game, which put ordinary people front and center. These shows capitalized on the idea that there are plenty of people who will do anything to get on television and millions more who will want to watch them. When NBC dropped his show The Parent Game, Barris bought the show back from NBC and sold it to local stations all over the country. This was the beginning of the multibillion dollar business of first-run syndication television.

Barris will talk about his career in television as well as his new book, The Big Question, based on an audacious premise about a reality show of the future. Barris has authored several other books including You and Me, Babe and the autobiographies The Game Show King: A Confession and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: An Unauthorized Autobiography (which became a major motion picture starring George Clooney).
