Bitty in Philly: Dub Reggae Production Demo with Bitty McLean
Thursday, November 2, 2017
6:30 PM-8:30 PM
Join us for a special behind the scenes look at making Dub music with musical artist, engineers and producers Bitty McLean and Guillaume Bougard.
This event is at its essence a mixing lecture. McLean and Bougard will demonstrate live how to transform a song from its original recording into a dub version.
Bitty McLean is a singer from Jamaican heritage who has been recording since the early
90's. His first release, "It Keeps Raining" was a top 10 pop hit in the UK and other countries.
In recent years, he has recorded and toured with legendary Jamaican producers and
musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. His voice has often been compared to that of
American Soul singers from the early 60's, in the same vein as Jamaican Rocksteady (the
late 60's precursor to Reggae music) stars like Ken Boothe or Alton Ellis.
In addition to singing, Bitty has established a superior reputation as a mixing engineer as
well as a producer, mixing dub tracks for Sly & Robbie or the Wailers, and producing groups
like UB40 on their multimillion seller "Promises and lies" or Hawaiian star Justin.
Paris-based Guillaume Bougard operates the independent TABOU1 label, specialized in
Jamaican music. With over 100 references, TABOU1 has built a large audio and video
catalog, producing artists such as Horace Andy, Gregory Isaacs, U Roy, and of course Bitty
McLean and Sly & Robbie. He also manages and handles Bitty McLean's and Sly & Robbie's
digital catalogs, respectively Silent River and TAXI Records. TAXI Records boasts the largest
catalog of Jamaican music, on a par with Studio One or Channel One.
Guillaume frequently writes articles in various music publications and has lectured at
various schools in France. He has also helped represent 250 Jamaican artists against the
French copyright society and obtained a $4 million settlement as well as the now recurring
payment of performance royalties.
