Peter Wiegold: Music Without Boundaries

10/11/2017 2:49:24 PM

Peter Wiegold, the critically acclaimed international composer and conductor will present Music Without Boundaries at the Mandell Theater on Monday, October 16th . Wiegold is a pioneer in contemporary music, recognized for his innovative composition while crossing boundaries of genre and culture. He works to implement instruments and musical styles of different backgrounds and cultures to create classical compositions that challenge the expected. His lecture will explore his concept that, “There are no rigid boundaries among composers’, conductors’, and players’ imaginations. One must simply find the right trigger for the right imagination at the right time.”

Wiegold’s impressive background includes conducting world renowned music ensembles such as the Composers’ Ensemble and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. His compositions include Scare-Fire and He is armoured without, which have been performed internationally at festivals including the BBC Proms and Cheltenham Festival. Wiegold is the director of Club Inégales, London, a venue that brings together artists from a range of cultures, and is home to the ensemble, Notes Inégales. Peter Wiegold is the founding director of the Institute of Composing, which services as a “think-tank for new music across all genres”. He also serves as the director of Alchemy, the new music ensemble within the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In addition, he is a contributor and co-writer of Beyond Britten: The Composer and the Community, a series of essays looking at music and its role in the community.

While at Drexel, Wiegold will also teach a master class to members of the Drexel University Orchestra. Music Without Boundaries will address his approach to include cultural and stylistic diversity in music and composition while considering its accessibility to the community.
