Concert Band: Luminescence
11/15/2017 3:52:31 PM
The Drexel Concert Band, comprised of over 70 musicians from across the University, will present Luminescence on Sunday, December 10 at 7PM in Mandell Theater. Their Fall Concert program is curated around the theme of light and the spirit of the holiday season, and includes works by Tchaikovsky, Wilson, Ticheli, Zainelli, & Reed.
Concert goers will be dazzled by each of the selected works, specifically chosen for their effervescent ambience or texture. Guest composer and conductor, Jose Ignacio Blesa Lull of Valencia, Spain, will conduct two of his own works, Sparks of the Oriental Light and Mare Tenebrosum, and trumpet soloist Marco Tampieri of Cesena, Italy will perform Luigi Zaninelli's The Golden Horn with the Concert Band. M. Tampieri is Professor of Trumpet at the Conservatory of Music in Cesena, and his collaboration with the Concert Band is part of the International Music Project (IMP). The Concert Band will also present the premiere performance of Philadelphia-based composer, arranger, and professional French hornist, Frank Stroble, and his Christmas Kaleidoscope.
The International Music Project (IMP), is a consortium of eleven American & Italian colleges/universities and conservatories created to provide wind band and chamber music performance, pedagogy, and conducting symposia for emerging professionals. Over the past five years, the Drexel Concert Band has enjoyed wonderful opportunities through the IMP, yielding appearances by noted conductor M. Filippo Salemmi (Bevagna, Italy) and Angelo Sormani (Como, Italy). In addition, they've featured several composers who have written works specifically for the ensemble, including Alvin Singleton, Raphael Fusco, Nicholas Vasallo, Frank Stroble, Mark Kuss, and Luke Abruzzo.
