The concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999, David Kim is a renowned violinist whose “superb, delicate solos” are “gold on gold” (New York Times). Mr. Kim will visit Drexel this month to conduct a master class with six selected students in a mentoring and feedback session on view to the public. The class will take place on Wednesday, October 29 at 5:00pm in Main Building Auditorium (3141 Chestnut Street).
On November 23, Mr. Kim will return to Drexel for a performance with the Drexel University Orchestra at 7:30pm in the Main Auditorium. The first half of the concert will feature Drexel University Orchestra students in performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, a five movement piece rooted in Spanish folk melodies. In the second half of the concert, Mr. Kim will join students on stage for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35.
Drexel University Orchestra students are talented musicians who come from virtually all Drexel Schools and Colleges, representing programs that range from Engineering to Nursing, Design & Merchandising, Physics and Graphic Design. Performing on stage with David Kim will be a special experience for our student-musicians. Following the concert, a 9:00pm reception will provide the opportunity for conversation with Mr. Kim.
David Kim started playing violin at the age of three, began studies with renowned teacher Dorothy DeLay at the age of eight, and later attended The Julliard School. Mr. Kim appears as a soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra each season as well as with numerous orchestras around the world. He also appears internationally at festivals such as Brevard, MasterWorks (USA) and Pacific (Japan). Highlights of Mr. Kim’s 2014-15 season include a return as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra in New York City and on PBS stations across the USA, a residency at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, a return to L'Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne in France, and recitals and appearances with orchestras across the United States.
