Red and white square DesignPhiladelphia logoThe annual DesignPhiladelphia Festival is an event that unites the region’s dynamic creative community by bringing together individuals and organizations from across the design spectrum, placing a spotlight on Philadelphia as a hub of creativity and innovation. The theme of this year’s 9th annual festival, “EXPERIENCEdesign,” aims to spark emotions and engage the senses. What better way to experience design than to surround yourself with it?

As our contribution to the 2013 DesignPhiladelphia Festival, we are hosting an open house event, “Making Spaces,” at the URBN Center (3501 Market St., Philadelphia) on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6p.m. Our event will include tours of our state-of-the-art Hybrid Making lab, Motion Capture studio, Black Box Theater, computerized knit prototyping studio and 12,000-garment Historic Costume Collection. Students and faculty will offer demonstrations of 3D printers, laser cutters, and other cutting-edge technology housed in our URBN Center and the URBN Annex. The d&mShop will also be popping up in the URBN Center Lobby, giving visitors the opportunity to browse and shop for bespoke items made by our students, faculty, staff and alumnni. Come visit our new design facilities and see for yourself what Philadelphia Inquirer architecture critic Inga Saffron calls “a buzzing, creative hive” and “one of Philadelphia's most thrilling new designs.”

By experiencing the intersection of design thinking, high-tech fabrication and creativity, those attending will come away with a sense of how interdisciplinary collaborations can address important real world problems and create products, spaces, and designs that improve and beautify our everyday lives.

Light refreshments will be served. To RSVP, email Lisa Visco (visco@drexel.edu) or call 215-895-1029
