Ana Diez Roux, MD, PhD, MPH, Dean of the Dornsife School of Public Health, moderated the discussion – charging a panel of faculty and students from the school to analyze what the election outcome may mean for the field and what the public health community should be thinking about and doing together.

  Four MPH students recently completed practicums with funding support from the Urban Health Collaborative, an initiative of the Dornsife School of Public Health. As the inaugural cohort of UHC funded practicums, their wide-ranging work illustrates the breadth and depth of public health. The students engaged on the local, regional, and national levels with topics including active transportation, air pollution, encouraging policy related activities, and early childhood learning.

  Post-doctoral fellow Sharrelle Barber, ScD, MPH, has focused much of her research with the Urban Health Collaborative on the connections between race, place and health in the U.S. South. This summer, she took on a new challenge: applying her social epidemiological approach to study the health implications of residential segregation by class and race in Brazil. Early results from her work are striking, as race, place and health have rarely been discussed and studied there.

  City of Philadelphia Health Commissioner Thomas Farley has launched a new series of publications focusing on data highlighting a particularly important health issue. Produced in partnership with the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative at the Dornsife School of Public Health, the first edition of Chart focuses on the epidemic of overdoses from opioids in Philadelphia.

  At the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative Distinguished Speaker Series on April 19, Anthony Iton, MD, JD, MPH, took attendees through his analysis of the reasons and remedies for health inequity, and introduced the audience to his work on the California Endowment's Building Healthy Communities initiative: a $1 billion, 10-year project that aims to improve health status in 14 California counties, by dedicating its resources exclusively to addressing social determinants rather than paying for health care.

- Urban Health Collaborative Convenes Network of Urban Health Leaders from Latin America

  Nearly 30 participants from diverse scientific backgrounds – physicians, social scientists, geographers, engineers, urban planners, architects, epidemiologists – attended the second meeting of the Network for Urban Health in Latin America and the Caribbean. The network was launched in Philadelphia in September of 2015 in the context of the Drexel Dornsife School of Public Health Urban Health Symposium. The second meeting was held March 7 and 8 at the foothills of the Andes mountains in Santiago, Chile.
