Types of Programs
Drexel Sponsored Programs
Free Standing (Full Term Program)
Free standing programs are designed specifically for study abroad purposes. Courses are taken by students from Drexel and other American universities. Because the programs are catered specifically for study abroad students (rather than local students), courses usually include field trips and site visits to utilize the city as an integral part of the learning experience. Some programs only have a select list of courses while others have more extensive courses available.

Exchange (Full Term Program)
Exchange programs immerse students fully in the host university life and culture, taking courses with local students, local faculty, and participating in campus activities. These programs offer the widest range of course options because students may select directly from the course catalog of the host university. In addition to sending students, Drexel also welcomes incoming exchange students from our international partners.

Intensive Courses Abroad (Short Term Program)
Intensive Courses Abroad (ICAs) offer the opportunity to have an international academic experience in a short period of time (generally 7 - 10 days during break weeks). ICAs are normally led by a Drexel faculty director, in conjunction with an on campus course before and/or after the tour. They include activities such as guest lectures, industry visits, and other hands on events that transform the city into a living laboratory.

Independent Study Abroad (Short or Long Term)
While Drexel offers a vast range of study abroad options, there may not be a program that suits every student's particular needs or objectives. Students who have not identified a suitable Drexel sponsored program may want to consider the Independent Study Abroad option. Independent programs are usually run by other American universities, study abroad provider companies, or international universities themselves. All courses taken abroad will be listed as transfer credit on their Drexel transcript. In this situation, the academic advisor can pre-approve all courses and determine how the transfer credit will be evaluated.
