With spring term right around the corner, Drexel Public Safety (DPS) is providing tips for celebrating responsibly over Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day, and what to do in case of an alcohol emergency. Plus: Discover information on lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and e-scooters, and how to secure your property safely.
How to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break Safely
Drexel Public Safety (DPS) encourages all Dragons to enjoy their time off and attend festive events responsibly with these basic safety precautions to keep in mind wherever you are:
- Practice the buddy system whenever possible, particularly when going out to a party, bar or club, or when taking public transit at night. Always identify a designated driver or have a ride home arranged if you are drinking.
- Never leave your drink unattended at a social event. If a friend becomes disoriented or unusually intoxicated, take them to a safe space and call for help immediately.
- Walk in well-lit areas and avoid using darker, quieter alleys or low occupancy / vacant passages, especially at night. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions from smartphones, headsets and other mobile devices, particularly when crossing the street and late at night.
- Keep your belongings close to your body. If your wallet, phone, backpack or purse is taken, don't fight; give it up immediately and call the Drexel University Police Department (DUPD) at 215.895.2222 or 9-1-1.
- Do not flash valuables such as smartphones, money or credit cards around in public. Have your key out and ready when walking to your car or home door.
What Does an Alcohol Emergency Look Like?
Excessive alcohol use can result in alcohol intoxication, alcohol poisoning or alcohol overdose. American Addiction Centers shares the below symptoms of alcohol poisoning, as well as risk factors, so you know what to look out for:
- Mental confusion and stupor
- Difficulty remaining conscious
- Vomiting
- Seizure
- Slowed or irregular breathing
- Clammy skin or paleness
- Slow heart rate
- Loss of gag reflex
- Low body temperature (may be indicated by chills or shivers)
If you recognize any of the above symptoms in a friend or family member’s behavior, call 911 or 215.895.2222. DPS encourages all students to become familiar with the Responsible Dragon Amnesty Policy (RDAP) offered through the Office of Student Conduct & Care. This life-saving policy provides amnesty from disciplinary action for Students or Student Organizations who seek medical assistance during an alcohol or drug related emergency.
Please note: Underage drinking is not permitted on campus, nor supported by Drexel Public Safety. If you are going to consume alcohol, DPS and the Office of Student Conduct & Care recommend doing so responsibly. Drinking in moderation and being mindful of one's limits, pacing and planning are all crucial for ensuring social gatherings remain safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.

How to Avoid Battery Fires and Explosions
The popularity of electric bicycles and electric scooters has increased worldwide in the last few years. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides guidance through their informative video on the concern over the batteries catching on fire and causing explosions. The main problem can lie with damaged or defective batteries that can overheat, catch fire or explode. The NFPA provides safety tips, including:
- Purchase and use devices, batteries and charging equipment that are listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and labeled accordingly.
- Always follow the instructions from the manufacturer.
- Only use the battery and the charger that were designed for, and came with, the device.
- Do not keep charging the device or device battery after it is fully charged.
- Only charge one device or device battery at a time to prevent overloading the circuit.
- Keep batteries at room temperature when possible. Do not charge them at temperatures below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
- Do not store batteries in direct sunlight or inside hot vehicles, and keep them away from children and liquids
- Store e-bikes, e-scooters and batteries away from exit doors and anything that can get hot or catch fire.
- Only have device repairs performed by a qualified professional.
- Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Recycling is the best option.
Office of Fire and Emergency Services prohibits e-bikes or e-scooters to be connected to any electric outlet within Drexel buildings for the purpose of charging.

Park Your E-bike or E-scooter With Safety in Mind
There are marked, designated scooter racks throughout campus to properly secure your device. Do not lock your device onto trees, railings or any other property. You can view a full list of scooter rack locations on the Business Services website.

Get to Know Us: Sergeant Tim Adkins
Sergeant Tim Adkins has been with DUPD since June 2021. He spent two years as a patrol officer, followed by a year on bike patrol, before being promoted to sergeant this January. As an overnight campus police sergeant, Tim oversees the safety and security of the University community during nighttime hours, manages patrol operations, responds to incidents, and ensures compliance with policies and procedures. He also provides leadership to officers, coordinates emergency responses, and serves as the primary point of contact for critical situations requiring law enforcement presence.
Adkins says his favorite and most rewarding part of his job is the ability to have a positive influence on team morale by providing support and fostering a strong working environment for his team. He enjoys leadership development and mentoring new officers, helping to shape the future of the department. But above all, every time he has the opportunity to assist, guide or help someone in the community, he’s reminded of why he chose this profession in the first place.
A fun fact about Adkins is that in 2015, he and his wife won their wedding on WIP Sports Radio by playing the “Almost Newlywed Game Show” live on air. Fast forward to today, and he compares his home life to that of a circus (in the best way possible) sometimes with three young kids, three dogs and two cats. In addition to his busy home life, he is managing his work schedule and attending grad school for cybersecurity.
