Summertime Safety and National Night Out

Learn how to stay safe this summer — whether you’re staying close to home, going on vacation, or just chilling at the pool, lake or ocean. Plus: Drexel Public Safety invites everyone to come out for a night of community and connection from 5–8 p.m. on Aug. 6 along Lancaster Walk.

Swim the Summer Away – With Safety in Mind!

Pools, oceans and lakes are generally a popular destination to beat the summer heat, but they also pose potential dangers. Drownings are preventable, and we encourage you and your families to follow simple water safety protocols provided by the U.S. Fire Administration:

• When children are near water, adults should be supervising and remain focused. Do not read, use your cell phone or leave the vicinity.
• Keep the pool and deck clear of floats, balls and toys after you get out of the pool.
• Four-sided fencing is recommended to separate the pool area from the home and yard. The fencing should be at least 4 feet high and have self-closing and self-latching gates that open outward.

Please also take note of the following tips from the National Fire Protection Association  regarding electric shock drowning (ESD). ESD happens when electrical systems leak electric current into the water, causing the current to pass through the body, leading to paralysis and drowning. These hazards exist in swimming pools, hot tubs, spas and boats, as well as in waters near boats, marinas and boat launches.

• As mentioned above, do not swim near boats, marinas or boat launches.
• If you or someone you know is in the water and begins to feel a tingle, swim away from the tingle and avoid metal ladders to get out of the water.
• Although it seems like a natural response, do not jump in to save someone from ESD, as you may become a victim.
• Spread the word about the risk of electric shock drowning and how to prevent it.

July Is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month

More than one million drivers fall victim to vehicle theft each year. You can watch a video from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about preventing vehicle theft to learn ways to decrease your odds of having this costly crime affect you and your family.

Do you need a steering wheel lock for your vehicle? Drexel affiliates and community residents who own a Hyundai or Kia can come to Drexel University Police Headquarters at 3219 Arch St. and pick up a steering wheel lock free of charge. A valid driver’s license and proof of Hyundai or Kia vehicle registration will be required to receive the steering wheel lock.

Stay Safe During Your Vacations

It is great to get away from the rigors of work and school and enjoy yourself. Having a plan and taking precaution are important steps to ensure a safe and fun time when you are residing away from home. Here are some tips to consider:

• Safe accommodations: Hotels, motels and other commercial sleeping locations should have — at the very least — working smoke alarms. It is even better if the buildings are sprinkler protected and have fire extinguishers nearby. Exit doors need to provide security and also function properly in the event of an emergency. Be sure to confirm these safety measures before booking.
• Fire safety at your destination: While cooking, stand by your meal to prevent an unattended cooking fire. Make sure no candle is left unattended. All smoking materials must be wet down and placed in a metal container.
• Responsible alcohol consumption: This is always a must to avoid accidental fires or damaged property.
• Emergency exit locations: Be mindful of overcrowding when frequenting clubs, restaurants, concerts and outdoor venues. Always know where the emergency exits are located wherever you may be.

Get to Know Us: Captain John Hall

Captain John Hall joined Drexel Police 10 years ago as a patrol officer and has been in his role as administrative captain since February 2021. While recently working our Fourth of July holiday detail, he had the pleasure of helping two visitors navigate their way through the road closures to get to the Welcome America festivities. This experience was fresh on his mind when he shared with us the following message to the community: “Do not be afraid to interact with our police officers. We are human just like everyone else; we just chose to do a different job. We have families and hobbies like everyone else, and we are here to help and protect you.”

Save the Date: National Night Out on Aug. 6

Drexel Public Safety will once again be hosting National Night Out (NNO) from 5–8 p.m. on Aug. 6 on Lancaster Walk. NNO enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. This event also provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. We hope you can join us for an evening of music, food, resources and camaraderie.

Learn How to Be SAFE With Public Safety’s Hands-On Classes

Public Safety’s self-protection program, Self-Awareness for Everyone (SAFE), is open to any student, faculty or professional staff member looking to develop skills for fostering their personal safety. Due to the hands-on nature of the class, it is strongly recommended that you register with a fellow Dragon. Participation in the techniques is recommended, but not required. Registration is required 72 hours prior to the class. You can register via Eventbrite for these classes, which are also available by request for your group.
